SS BOTANICAL BASKET
Description
Turbo 500 - Botanical Basket Instructions
WARNING
- Make sure botanical's do not fall into condenser column as this may cause a blockage. If this does occur please contact customer service before trying to extract the blockage.
- The botanical basket can be used with both the Turbo 500 and the Alembic distillation systems.
- Follow the instructions for distilling neutral spirit from a sugar wash, and then filter it through the EZ filter, as per standard instructions.
- When using our Botanical Mix, we recommend using a minimum amount of 6 Litres(1.5 US Gal) of 40% ABV neutral, filtered spirit.
Alembic Pot Still - Instructions
1. Add the filtered alcohol into the boiler and top up to 25 L (6.5 US Gal) with water.
2. Fill botanical basket with the desired botanical's.
3. Attach the copper condenser arm to the copper dome. Instead of using the stainless steel nut, secure the condenser arm to the dome using the head of the Still Spirits Botanical Basket. Ensure that the basket is secured tightly. Insert thermometer into the hole at the top of the condenser. Attach tubing as per standard instructions.
4. Turn on unit. It will take approximately 1 hour to heat to boiling temperature. Once the temperature probe reaches 55°C (131°F) turn on the cooling water to a rate of 2.5 Litres (2.5 US qt) per min.
5. Collect all the spirit into a 5 L (1.5 US Gal) demijohn. Stop collecting when the spirit reaches 20% ABV.
6. Water down to 40% ABV and leave to settle before consumption.
Air Still
How do I distil essential oils?
- It is possible to distil essential oils with the Air Still. This differs depending on the material you use. But a good guide is as follows:
- Rosemary - Use 300 g of rosemary leaves and 3.65 litres of water (don't fill over the max amount). Turn the Air Still on, collect the distillate (preferable in fractions). We recommend collecting no more than 80% (3 litres) otherwise it will boil dry and cook the rosemary.
- You will collect 3 litres of hydrosol (water/flavour) and a small amount of oil on top - the essential oils. Use a pipette to collect the essential oil. If you're going to make alcohol from this afterwards, boil 2-3 lots of water through it first otherwise your alcohol will smell like rosemary.
How do I distil water?
Before use, clean the inside of the still and fill it with clean water to the 4 litre line which is marked on the inside. Make sure that no water is spilt on the outside of the body and ensure that both electrical sockets are clean and dry.
Using the Infusion Basket
The Still Spirits Air Still has a hole under the lid where the vapour enters and condensers in the cooling coil before coming out as liquid alcohol. If botanicals get stuck within the cooling coil, this may cause unwanted pressure build up inside the unit.
To prevent this, when using the Air Still Infusion Basket, we suggest to:
- In New Zealand, home distillation of alcohol is completely legal without a license.
- For all Australian customers, you can legally own a 5 liter capacity still (such as this air still) for the distillation of water or essential oils, without a license and without breaking the law.
- Please note however, it is ILLEGAL for you to distill alcohol in Australia WITHOUT an excise manufacturers license! We STRONGLY suggests you check the legalities of your country before purchasing distillation equipment.
