Turbo 500 - Botanical Basket Instructions

1. Add the filtered alcohol into the boiler and top up to 25 L (6.5 US Gal)with water.
2. Remove all saddles from the column. Assemble the Turbo 500 unit as perwater distilling instructions by having the cooling water directly throughthe condenser, by-passing the reflux coil and water outlet block.
3. Attach only the threaded section of the basket to the condenser columnand underside of the lid in place of the stainless steel plug.
4. Fill the bottom piece of the botanical basket with your desired botanical's.Orientate the pieces you have just assembled so they are the correct wayup and screw in the basket from the bottom.
5. Turn on unit. It will take approximately 1 hour to heat to boilingtemperature. Before the liquid starts to boil, turn on the cooling waterapproximately 30 minutes after the unit was turned on. Adjust thecooling water to a rate of 2.5 Litres (2.5 US qt) per min or so that the distillatedoesn’t become steaming, but rather flowing in a liquid form.
6. Collect all the spirit into a 5 Litres (1.5 US Gal) demijohn. Stop collecting whenthe spirit reaches 20% ABV ( Alcohol by volume ).
7. Water down to 40% ABV and leave to settle before consumption.

WARNING

  • Make sure botanical's do not fall into condenser column as this may cause a blockage. If this does occur please contact customer service before trying to extract the blockage.
  • The botanical basket can be used with both the Turbo 500 and the Alembic distillation systems.
  • Follow the instructions for distilling neutral spirit from a sugar wash, and then filter it through the EZ filter, as per standard instructions.
  • When using our Botanical Mix, we recommend using a minimum amount of 6 Litres(1.5 US Gal) of 40% ABV neutral, filtered spirit.

Alembic Pot Still - Instructions

1. Add the filtered alcohol into the boiler and top up to 25 L (6.5 US Gal) with water.

2. Fill botanical basket with the desired botanical's.

3. Attach the copper condenser arm to the copper dome. Instead of using the stainless steel nut, secure the condenser arm to the dome using the head of the Still Spirits Botanical Basket. Ensure that the basket is secured tightly. Insert thermometer into the hole at the top of the condenser. Attach tubing as per standard instructions.

4. Turn on unit. It will take approximately 1 hour to heat to boiling temperature. Once the temperature probe reaches 55°C (131°F) turn on the cooling water to a rate of 2.5 Litres (2.5 US qt) per min.

5. Collect all the spirit into a 5 L (1.5 US Gal) demijohn. Stop collecting when the spirit reaches 20% ABV.

6. Water down to 40% ABV and leave to settle before consumption.

Air Still

How do I distil essential oils?

  • It is possible to distil essential oils with the Air Still. This differs depending on the material you use. But a good guide is as follows:
  • Rosemary - Use 300 g of rosemary leaves and 3.65 litres of water (don't fill over the max amount). Turn the Air Still on, collect the distillate (preferable in fractions). We recommend collecting no more than 80% (3 litres) otherwise it will boil dry and cook the rosemary.
  • You will collect 3 litres of hydrosol (water/flavour) and a small amount of oil on top - the essential oils. Use a pipette to collect the essential oil. If you're going to make alcohol from this afterwards, boil 2-3 lots of water through it first otherwise your alcohol will smell like rosemary.

How do I distil water?

Before use, clean the inside of the still and fill it with clean water to the 4 litre line which is marked on the inside. Make sure that no water is spilt on the outside of the body and ensure that both electrical sockets are clean and dry.

  • Fit the top cover of the still in place and plug the fan lead into the socket in the still body.
  • Place a 4 litre collection jug under the outlet nozzle.
  • Press the reset button on the base of the still.
  • Connect the main power cord between the still and the mains power socket.
  • Turn on the mains power socket switch.
  • You will hear the fan in the top cover of the still start.
  • It will take about 1½ hours for the water to heat up.
  • Once distillation starts, water will begin to drip into the collection bottle.
  • The still will take about 10 hours to distil off the 4 litres (1 US gallon) .
  • The power supply reset switches off automatically when the distillation is completed.
  • You will need to press the reset button on the base of the still before you next use it.
  • After distillation the water needs to be polished. We recommend filtering the distilled water through a Still Spirits Air Still Carbon Filter.
  • Using the Infusion Basket

The Still Spirits Air Still has a hole under the lid where the vapour enters and condensers in the cooling coil before coming out as liquid alcohol. If botanicals get stuck within the cooling coil, this may cause unwanted pressure build up inside the unit.

To prevent this, when using the Air Still Infusion Basket, we suggest to:

  • Use a muslin cloth, hop bag or tea bag if using small plant materials such as dried herbs and spices.
  • Use plant materials that are larger than the hole under the lid (greater than 1 cm).
  • Do not turn the top of the Air Still upside down when inserting the basket to ensure no plant material falls into the hole.

    • In New Zealand, home distillation of alcohol is completely legal without a license.
    • For all Australian customers, you can legally own a 5 liter capacity still (such as this air still) for the distillation of water or essential oils, without a license and without breaking the law.

    • Please note however, it is ILLEGAL for you to distill alcohol in Australia WITHOUT an excise manufacturers license! We STRONGLY suggests you check the legalities of your country before purchasing distillation equipment.
