When filtering spirit at 40% ABV, the industry-standard and most effective granular size to use is 12×40 mesh (0.42 mm to 1.68 mm) or 20×40 mesh (0.42 mm to 0.85 mm.

This high-grade 1050–1200 internal porosity carbon is perfect for this application. At 40% ABV, ethanol molecules tightly hold onto fusel oils and unwanted congeners. To strip these off-flavours out, you need the high surface area contact that these specific granular sizes provide.
